About Maldives

The Maldives are an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, south of Sri Lanka. They comprise 27 atolls, consisting of a total of 1192 coral islands. The Maldives are especially known for their crystal clear waters, blue lagoons, beaches and extensive reefs.

The capital of Maldives is Malé. Malé is located in Kaafu Atoll and has a population of 103693. The total population is 523787.

The national language of the Maldives is Dhivehi, but English is now also understood and spoken by all younger generations.

The national currency is Rufiyaa. However, U.S. dollars are now also an everyday means of payment.

The best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April. Between May and October is the rainy season, during which showers, thunderstorms or storms are to be expected from time to time. Nevertheless, the Maldives are worth a trip even in this time, because due to climate change, one can no longer say with certainty that in the rainy season really always bad weather is to be expected.

The Maldives is a Muslim state that continues to enforce its rules and principles. Therefore, alcohol is prohibited on local islands. However, tourists who do not want to give up their drink can visit floating bars, which are now located in front of many islands and can be visited to have an alcoholic drink or two.

Furthermore, it is desired that tourists respect the dress code and do not explore the island lightly dressed. As a woman, shorts and a T-shirt or dress that does not show too much cleavage and in the best case covers the shoulders should be worn. Men should also wear T-shirts that cover the shoulders.

On local islands, tourists now almost everywhere pause a bikini beach where they can enter the water or sunbathe in swimwear. On public beaches, it is requested to enter the water with covered shoulders and knee-length shorts as well.
